John Calipari wants you to know basketball is not communism
Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari explained Thursday that playing time isn't always awarded evenly to every player by reiterating that he, and basketball, are 'not communism.'
A transcript provided by The Courier-Journal said Calipari was asked if he was surprised about, or had any reaction to, being ranked No. 1 in Thursday's preseason Coaches Poll. The second paragraph of his response wove a little off course, and mentioned communism three times. Quoth Cal:
I imagine ... where were we ranked last year? Probably one or two, and we almost fell off the face of the earth, so to me, that's fine. It's good. It's something for our kids to live up to, but really it has no bearing on what we're about to try to undertake. Let me just say this about the two platooning. And this is not my political affiliation, but this isn't communism, so if one group deserves to play a little bit more, they will.
It's not communism. If two guys separate themselves and need to get more minutes because you all look and say that kid is so good, he needs more minutes, it's not communism, they'll get more minutes. But we're going to figure that out as we go.
No word yet on whether the system of minute-distribution in college basketball is capitalist or socialist, though.
