England player calls out critic after scoring tying goal
Former England player and current soccer pundit Paul Merson was not happy with the way England manager Roy Hodgson constructed the national team's roster for its Tuesday friendly against Italy.
Merson wrote an article for Sky Sports singling out the selection of Tottenham's Andros Townsend as a mistake.
If Andros Townsend can get in then it opens it up for anybody. We are not picking players who are playing well for their clubs – he got taken off after 30 minutes the other week against United.
Townsend scored the game-tying goal against Italy late in the game and then followed it up with a wonderful tweet aimed at the hater.
The goal was the 23-year-old's third in seven appearances for the national team, tying the number of goals scored by Merson in his 21 career caps for England.
