John Oliver destroys teams demanding publicly-funded stadiums

John Oliver took American sports owners to task on Sunday night for using billions of dollars of public money to build stadiums for their privately owned, and financially successful, teams.

John Oliver took American sports owners to task on Sunday night for using billions of public money to build stadiums for their privately owned, and financially successful, teams.

The host points out that despite cities having to tighten the purse strings on entities like hospitals and schools, they are still filling stadiums with outrageous features, like the fish tank at Miami's Marlins Park and the swimming pools at the Jacksonville Jaguars' EverBank Field.

He also calls out teams for repeatedly using the threat of relocation to scare politicians into supporting large municipal bonds for the building of stadiums, and finishes the whole segment with a Friday Night Lights-style inspirational locker room speech encouraging cities to remember that they are more than just their sports teams, except, it seems, for Cincinnati.
