Matt Simms on Chris Jones’ Impact in the Super Bowl, “He Had an MVP-Like Performance”

Matt and Phil Simms discuss the defensive line of the Chiefs, and how Chris Jones impacted the Super Bowl win.
In this story:

Many people expected Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones to have a big game in the Super Bowl, with many believing he would emerge as the Super Bowl MVP.

Jones may not have had multiple sacks, but his pressure skills were on full display, making life for Brock Purdy very difficult. His athleticism is something to behold, and Matt and Phil Simms commented on that during Simms Complete.

"Kansas City's defensive line. I think as the game wore on, you and I were sitting there and, oh my gosh, it just was one play after another, some big damn dude, just pushing people, whatever. And of course, it always starts with Chris Jones. My gosh, he was tremendous."

"He had an MVP-like performance, you know, he had that Justin Tuck-like performance here where he's not going to get the credit, you know, in the stat sheet. But damn, was he around. A lot of these plays he affecting the outcome of the game."

Both Simms gentlemen are right in that Jones was all over the field. There were a few times when he nearly caught Purdy.

Many people know that Purdy does not do well under pressure, which is the case for most QBs. However, Purdy is often thrown off his game when he has defensive players barreling down his path.

Jones may not have had multiple sacks, but his pressures made the day very uncomfortable for the 49ers offense.

"Willie Gay played great. Christian Jones, Farrell played well, and Wharton played well. Like all these guys had huge impacts in, you know, nothing statistically, but just the overall physicality of the game, which made it difficult, I think, for Brock."

The entire Chief's defensive front was able to stop the 49ers from gaining too much yardage on the ground while also getting in the face of Purdy. All in all, this led to a huge Super Bowl win despite the team not having a multitude of sacks on the stat sheet.
