F1 News: Aston Martin All But Confirms Fernando Alonso Contract Extension

Mike Krack wants to keep Fernando Alonso for the time being.

Aston Martin's team principal, Mike Krack, has spoken out about the performance of his team and the uncertainties of predicting the outcome of their future performance. Even after the Monaco pole ended up being a close call and Spain represented a slight setback, Krack remains hesitant to make predictions. Despite this, he has all but confirmed that Fernando Alonso will be staying with the team for years to come.

As he pointed out in an interview with Formula One, he said:

"It is very difficult to say, because it is such a relative competition that you also depend on the pace of others and you depend on yourself... So I think it would be risky to say that we will win one in particular, or that we will be close to winning."

The team is gearing up to unveil a new floor next week in Canada, an upgrade they've been working on since the start of the season. Despite this, Krack asserts that maintaining their beginning-of-the-year form takes precedence over any other factor.

He said, "We have to see. We have to be there at every opportunity and if it comes, we have to be ready. Until then we have to work hard to stay in position and stay close. I will not make predictions of when we are going to win a race."

The team's lead driver, Alonso, has expressed his intention to continue racing for many years to come, citing 2025 and maybe even 2026, but this currently doesn't fall under his contract with the Silverstone-based team.

This commitment has been seen as a very positive aspect by Krack.

He said, "It's good to hear that, he has said that he wants to be there for several years and we would be happy with that. I think the main thing, and this is one of the great qualities, is the desire he has to be in front and his motivation."

However, Krack emphasised that what truly matters is providing Fernando with a competitive car that keeps his enthusiasm alive.

"We didn't think much about it, to be honest. We took it race by race and tried to do well every race. It's good to hear that, but we don't think too much about it yet. Let's make it happen," he stated.

The aim now is to keep the momentum going for Aston Martin as they continue into the rest of the calendar. And if Fernando is right about the upcoming upgrades, we're in for a great race in Canada.
