F1 News: Red Bull Advisor Fires Warning To Sergio Perez After "Unreasonable" Monaco Grand Prix

Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has issued a warning to Sergio Perez after the Monaco Grand Prix.

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has fired a warning to Sergio Perez after his difficult Monaco Grand Prix, saying he hopes those mistakes will be the only ones that the Mexican driver makes throughout the season.

The competition between both Red Bull drivers, Sergio Perez and current championship leader Max Verstappen, has been hotting up in recent weeks. Perez has proved to be the main threat to Verstappen for the championship so far this year. However, after Perez's poor performance on the streets of Monte Carlo, Verstappen has now extended his lead by 39 points.

Marko has reflected on Perez's weekend, saying to Sky Deutschland:

“It didn’t matter then. Everything went wrong there [Perez's qualifying crash which Marko branded as 'unreasonable'].

“I hope that today’s mistakes are enough for the rest of the season. In general, his speed when he drove free was good. But his crash in qualifying ruined the weekend.

“It was just a weekend where nothing worked for him at all.

“I would say the sooner he comes to Barcelona the better.”

This is not the first time the motorsport advisor has hit out at Perez, earlier this month he made it clear that the favourite has always been Verstappen. Marko said after the Miami Grand Prix:

“I can understand everyone's expectations, and we've highlighted how Checo has come a long way since the start of the year. But for me, it was always clear that Max was the big favourite between the two.

“On some street circuits, like in Jeddah and Baku, Checo is really strong. But I think Max taught everyone in Miami, Checo included, a lesson. Nobody can copy the way he has managed his tires in such a way that it is always possible to achieve the fastest lap at the end of the Grand Prix. And imagine what the gaps would have been like if Max had started from pole.”

Formula 1 is heading to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix this coming weekend where Perez will be hoping to turn things around and close the gap to Verstappen once again.
