NHL DFS: Slap Shot - Dec 14
With two articles today, use mine as more of a tournament focused article with Rob's being more detailed and giving you the top overall rated plays on the slate. For those who wonder, we DO NOT discuss our thoughts on the slate prior to writing the articles -- so when you see us on the same player or team it's not because we skewed each other thoughts one way or another. My key three skaters are always ones that I try to find in the mid range for value so that you can pair them with a full stack in tournaments.
Lots of teams are in action today but only 9 games make up the 7 pm EST MAIN slate tonight and with so few teams playing last night you naturally would guess that we have nobody on a back to back tonight -- and you would be WRONG as the New Jersey Devils of all teams get a B2B tonight in Phoenix vs the Coyotes after losing in Colorado last night.
Evgeny Kuznetsov - C - Washington
It's a Caps Dads trip as they start a two game road trip in Tampa Bay against the Lightning and usually these teams have some high scoring games when they meet up. With that comes a great spot for the up tempo Kuznetsov who has registered a point in 11 straight meetings with the Bolts and is a nice $5,800 affordable price tag tonight on the second line where he does best IMO with Vrana and Oshie for the Caps tonight. You will need exposure on this game either by getting skaters or going with one of the Goalies to stand on their heads in what should be a back and forth high volume game.
William Nylander - W - Toronto
One of the better games tonight is Edmonton hosting Toronto and the focus will be on McDavid vs Matthews but it's their left wingers who draw the most attention for me. Leon Draisaitl has been fantastic this season but it's Nylander on the other side who should benefit in a matchup against the Oilers who have given up 12 goals to left wingers over the past two weeks and his $5,100 price saves too much money compared to Drai to not go here as a core play tonight. As always, I don't mind playing Gary with Ace (Matthews).
Shayne Gostisbehere - D - Philadelphia
Brain says it's a Ghost game against the Wild who are the team I will keep picking on with defenseman until it stops working for multiple game straight. Gut says that Mat Niskanen is a fantastic other option for the Flyers tonight for only $100 cheaper but Ghost being on the top PP unit makes him the logical play here. The other team to target for D tonight is obviously Boston against Florida and Charlie McAvoy at $4200 is gonna produce mighty well and with Ghost that gives you some nice mid range value defenseman tonight.
MONTREAL - Danault, Gallagher, Tatar, Weber
Not sure if it is because RUSH is playing right now or what but I love the Canadiens tonight to drop a shit ton of goals on the Red Wings tonight. Picking on Detroit has certainly been a common play in NHL DFS this year but I strongly see it being the slate breaker tonight. With goals being given up all over the place by the Wings and them also snapping their losing streak (so the law of averages is busted) it's a perfect time to take a stab on someone you normally shouldn't consider. Ole Phil Danault who doesn't shoot the puck much but skating with Gallagher and Tatar he would shock me if he doesn't snag two assists tonight and this is a fairly affordable stack so rack em all up.
CANUCKS v SHARKS - Pettersson, Boeser, Couture, Kane
Clearly a coaching change didn't help the San Jose Sharks as they got roasted by the Rangers on home ice the other night. This is a very hard late night hammer to contend with fading tonight and it should be popular. The Sharks remain a favorite here but it's hard to trust them to honestly win but a back and forth 4-3 final is good enough reason to focus on this spot for a stack.
CAPS v BOLTS - Kuzy, Vrana, Oshie, Point, Kuch, Palat
Filling in the Kuzy line against the Tampa top line. Really like Palat for Tampa today.
Darcy Kuemper - Coyotes
Matt Murray - Penguins
Sergei Bobrovsky - Panthers
Mackenzie Blackwood - Devils
LINE LOCK: Danault, Gallagher, Tatar (Canadiens)
STUD WINGERS: Kane (Sharks), Kucherov (Bolts), Draisaitl (Oilers)
VALUE WINGER: Palat (Lightning)
TOP DEFENSEMAN: Ghost (Flyers)
