NHL: Slap Shot - Jan 21st

The NHL first half of the season officially wraps up tomorrow night but for DFS purposes it essentially ends tonight with only five games before almost everyone moves on to their all-star break. The good news is that the league is not on a super long break as there will be a full slate next Monday and a good schedule going forward from there, but if you wanna scratch that itch one more time then tonight is your night. I'd also caution that we could see some oddity with teams about to go on a mini-vacation but predicting that is just random so lets go with what we know today.

Blake Wheeler

Given how well the Hurricanes have played defense lately going with any Jets tonight will be super contrarian. Overall this could be viewed as one of the weaker spots to attack tonight but on a shorter 5 game slate we don't need much to go our way and the price discount + line combination of Wheeler on the top line is tempting. Most of Carolina's goals allowed this year have come to opposing centers and if the Jets get any production tonight it's Wheeler or Scheifele.

  • Also consider: Vincent Trocheck (FLA), Brock Nelson (NYI), Mika Zibanejad (NYR)

Patrick Kane

What if I told you that Patty Kane has not scored a goal since January 2nd? You probably wouldn't believe me because he has managed to record an assist in every game since then but it's true. The superstar winger will be facing his former coach tonight and that's a good enough narrative for me to call for the Kane hat trick special against Florida on a back to back game.

  • Also consider: David Pastrnak (BOS), Alex DeBrincat (CHI)

Erik Gustafsson

Really cheap defenseman against Florida in a game that should have lots of goals in it. Fastest selection I have made all year. This is not a slate that offers much reason to pay up at D versus other positions so I am spending down tonight.

  • Also consider: Nate Schmidt (VGK), Jacob Trouba (NYR)

This is the third meeting in just the last eight days and a spot I have gone to the Islanders on with disappointment the last two times as they lost both outings. I would definitely lean the Isles to win tonight but project this as a 4-3 close OT game tonight. Anthony Beauvillier and Mika Zibanejad are the core players from each team so its NYI2 and NYR1 for game stacking purposes.

  • NYI: Nelson, Beauvillier, Bailey
  • NYR: Zibanejad, Kreider, Buchnevich

Should be a chalky spot tonight but one that is hard to ignore. Aside from Kane and Gustafsson, this is a good spot for Vincent Trocheck as a one off on Florida's side. The Blackhawks are a very hard team to logically to stack and with Kane being the stud to pay for he would make sense as a one off with Toews or DeBrincat as well who are their other top dogs. Kubalik has been fantastic and is priced up to $5,300 but still makes sense with Toews too.

Connor Helleybuck (WPG) ... Will see a ton of shots and is the cheap goalie with high save upside play of the night.

Jaroslav Halak (BOS)

LINE LOCK: Nelson - Beauvillier - Bailey (Islanders)

ONE OFF WINGER: Patrick Kane (Blackhawks)

VALUE WINGER: Pavel Buchnevich (Rangers)

TOP DEFENSEMAN: Erik Gustafsson (Blackhawks)

FAVORITE BET: Isles / Rangers O6
