Scouting the NHL: Thu 10/12

Quick Hockey How-To...

The quickest and safest method for building a hockey tournament (and even cash honestly) lineup is to stack two Center-Wing-Wing lines together (Using Flex on DK) and two one off Defenseman. For example, take the first line for the Jets and the second line for the Predators, pair them up, lock in goalie and pick one off defenseman. You'll want to try and get full strength lines that also have power play exposure for that upside, but this is the best way to start. If you have questions please hit me up on twitter (@steve_renner). We will have more hockey how-to's as the season moves on.

We have a fantastic Thursday night slate tonight with seven games. Usually Thursday night is a larger NHL slate and as the year progresses you will see some huge Thursday contests on the sites.... The only team going tonight that played last night is Pittsburg, who travels from DC to Tampa.

Martin Jones (Confirmed) -- Jones is a heavy home favorite tonight against Buffalo who travels east to west and is not as deep at the Sharks. He doesn't give you a high shot volume but of all the "safe" options tonight, he is the best and should be the most popular goalie tonight. I like the Sharks to win tonight.

Jake Allen (Confirmed) -- I'm typically not on Allen or any Blues goalie. They are usually far better at home for some reason but I can't deny how good Allen and the Blues have been so far this year. They're also giving up a ton of shots and that should continue tonight against the Panthers. He makes sense tonight.

Antti Raanta (Confirmed) -- Because of his price Raanta is a great play tonight at home against Detroit. Raanta was looking great before going into Las Vegas and getting ambushed in the Golden Knights home opener and first game since the tradgedy in Vegas. I expect the Knights to be sneaky good at home this year and thus I won't let that one game bother me a ton. Raanta might get the night off after Domingue looked good filling in for him, but he's a fantastic value goalie option if he does start (consider Domingue too, but he stinks IMO).

Devin Dubnyk (Confirmed) -- Dubnyk was one of the best goalies at times last year and other times he was downright awful. The Blackhawks are skating red hot and thus Dubnyk will be < 5% owned in tournaments but when he is on he is among the elite goalies in the game and he could see well over 35 shots tonight.

LIGHTNING -- How does one not love Tampa tonight? They get a Pens tem who had a White House visit, then played a tough game against the Caps last night and now have to travel down to Tampa and deal with a fresh and hungry Lightning squad? Tampa has two lines that are in amazing spots tonight along with an elite DFS defenseman in Victor Hedman. The two lines to focus on are the Stamkos-Kucherov-Namestnikov line and the Palat-Point-Gourde line. Point has been red hot and out performing his price tag on both sites, but Stamkos is my guy to go off tonight. If I am spending up on Centers he is the #1 guy by far today. Both lines are also together on power plays so if doing multiple lineups you can roll Stamkos line on one and Point line on another... For me I love Stamkos-Namestnikov-Hedman as a C-W-D stack.

PREDATORS -- Nashville has games where everyone on the ice seems to score and then other spots where Filip Forsberg absolutely dominates. They tend to mix things up when they need too and so you can get a little random on your Predators stacks or as I like, just play them as one offs. Ryan Johansen and Victor Arvidsson draw a juicy matchup tonight and defenseman have excelled against the Stars which makes PK Subban the third leg of this stack if Roman Josi is out tonight.

JETS -- My road second line of the night is Winnipeg's electric line of Little-Laine-Perreault. Little and Perrault also offer some salary relief aing this a nice combination with Tampa's top line.

WILD -- I think the Wild are going to .... wait for it .... Go Wild on Corey Crawford tonight. Crawford is the "trendy" goalie who is hot and the veteran I cannot trust tonight. I'm curious to see the final line pairings for the Wild tonight and I prefer to roll the second line for road teams but something tells me Staal-Coyle-Niederreiter come through twice tonight.
