BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) Scott Harvey shot a 6-under 65 on Saturday to take the lead after the first round of stroke-play qualifying in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

The 36-year-old Harvey, from Greensboro, North Carolina, played Saucon Valley's Old Course, the site of match play in the event for players 25 and older. Harvey was a stroke off the course record of 64 set by Bruce Fleisher in the first round of the 2000 U.S. Senior Open.

''I haven't rolled the ball that well in the past couple of years, but today they just started dropping left and right,'' Harvey said. ''To come out here and shoot that kind of round, it feels phenomenal.''

Kenny Ebalo of Las Vegas had the best round on the Weyhill Course with a 70.

Bill Williamson of Cincinnati; Chadd Slutzky of Deer Park, Illinois; Don Bell of Port Orange, Florida; and Matthew Salane of Columbia, South Carolina, shot 70 on the Old Course.

Defending champion Michael McCoy of West Des Moines, Iowa, had a 73 on the Old Course. The 51-year-old McCoy was the low amateur this year in the U.S. Senior Open.

The top 64 players will advance to match play.
