The 2022 regular season flew by and ended with a bang. Here's a recap of the 11th and final week in Southern Section football.

ST. BONAVENTURE UPSETS NO. 21 OAKS CHRISTIAN FOR MARMONTE LEAGUE TITLE

For the second year in a row, RB Delon Thompson powered the Seraphs over Oaks Christian for a Marmonte League championship. This time, it was in upset fashion, as St. Bonaventure (bubble team) knocked off the No. 21 team in the section. Thompson ran for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns.

NO. 7 EDISON FINISHES STRONG AGAINST CORONA DEL MAR

For the third straight season, Edison won second place in the Sunset League with a 40-13 win over Corona del Mar. The victory also secured a Division 1 playoff birth for the Chargers, who will rematch Orange Lutheran – which they beat 34-13 on Sep. 2 – for the right to play St. John Bosco in the quarterfinals. Carter Hogue ran for 3 touchdowns and added an interception for Edison.

NO. 13 JSERRA BEATS NO. 8 ORANGE LUTHERAN TO COMPLETE IMPROBABLE RUN

After going 0-5 in conference play for two seasons in a row, the Lions are now the third place team in the Trinity League. They rolled to a 21-7 win against Orange Lutheran on Friday to force a three-way tie for third with OLu and Santa Margarita, and then won the coin flip to claim third. As a result, all three teams have made the Division 1 playoffs, which goes out to 10 teams this year.

JSerra will rematch Santa Margarita, which defeated it by one point less than a month ago, and the winner will play Mater Dei in the quarterfinals.

MISSION LEAGUE MADNESS: NO. 14 SERRA DEFEATS NO. 12 CHAMINADE, NO. 11 SIERRA CANYON WINS TITLE OUTRIGHT

After knocking off previously-unbeaten Chaminade last week, Sierra Canyon defeated Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 42-21 on Friday to go 4-1 in Mission League play. As Serra (Gardena) edged out Chaminade 32-23 in a comeback at the same time, that win gave the Trailblazers an undisputed Mission League title.

HOW THE REST OF THE TOP 25 FARED, AND OTHER NOTABLE RESULTS:

  • No. 1 Mater Dei routed Servite 48-17 to go 10-0.
  • No. 2 St. John Bosco cruised to a 56-14 win over No. 9 Santa Margarita after trailing 14-7 through one quarter.
  • No. 3 Corona Centennial blew out rival No. 25 Norco 42-0 to sweep the Big West - Upper.
  • No. 4 Long Beach Poly crushed Jordan 63-0 to finish off a 10-0 regular season.
  • No. 5 Los Alamitos thrashed Fountain Valley 68-0.
  • No. 6 Mission Viejo trounced Capistrano Valley 63-7.
  • No. 10 Inglewood blew out rival Morningside 45-0 to finish 10-0.
  • No. 15 Warren rinsed Dominguez 51-0 to sweep the Gateway League.
  • No. 16 Bishop Amat breezed to a 36-7 win over Alemany.
  • No. 17 Oak Hills held off a comeback from Sultana to go 10-0 for the first time in school history.
  • No. 18 Cajon completed a sweep of the Citrus Belt League with a 49-16 win against Redlands East Valley. The win cemented an unbeaten regular season against in-state competition for the Cowboys.
  • No. 19 Citrus Valley stomped Redlands 49-6.
  • No. 20 Rancho Cucamonga swept the Baseline League with a 31-14 win over Upland.
  • No. 22 Apple Valley drubbed Burroughs (Ridgecrest) 56-2.
  • No. 23 Yorba Linda went 10-0 for the second straight season with a 56-27 win against Brea Olinda.
  • No. 24 Chaparral completed an underdog run to second place in the Big West - Upper with a 26-14 win against Roosevelt (Eastvale).
  • Murrieta Valley defeated rival Vista Murrieta 49-32 to claim fourth place in the Big West - Upper.
  • Loyola beat St. Francis 28-27 in a mild upset to finish tied for first in the Angelus League with St. Francis and Cathedral, which routed Paraclete 42-0.
  • Cypress routed Crean Lutheran 42-6 for an Empire League title in a battle of unbeatens.
  • El Modena made it 10-0 with a 48-13 win against Esperanza.
  • Pacifica (Oxnard), Rio Mesa, and Santa Barbara defeated Buena, Ventura, and San Marcos (Santa Barbara), respectively, to finish in a three-way tie for first in the Channel League.
  • Etiwanda defeated Damien 30-27 in a light upset.
  • Temecula Valley knocked off Great Oak 17-10.
  • Palm Desert beat rival Palm Springs 31-16 to force a three-way tie atop the Desert Empire League.
  • La Serna blew out Whittier 55-13 to sweep the Del Rio League.
  • Bishop Diego defeated Simi Valley 49-28.
  • San Clemente got second place in the South Coast League after defeating Capistrano Valley 31-14.
  • Thousand Oaks, after sweeping the Canyon League last week, defeated Del Norte (San Diego) 55-26 to go 10-0.
  • Canyon (Anaheim) upset El Dorado 42-31 for second place in the North Hills League.
  • Charter Oak went undefeated as well with a 42-10 win against Alta Loma
  • Palos Verdes completed a dominant sweep of the Bay League by cruising to a 44-6 win against rival Peninsula.
  • Ayala defeated Bonita 42-20 for second place in the Mountain West League.
  • Camarillo outdueled Newbury Park 26-14 for second place in the Canyon League.
  • Orange shut out rival Santa Ana 35-0 to win the Orange Coast League.
  • Mira Costa routed rival Redondo Union 51-14 for second place in the Bay League.
  • Orange Vista defeated Rancho Verde 50-14 to clinch an Ivy League title.
  • Yucaipa outdueled Beaumont 22-21 for third place in the Citrus Belt.
  • San Juan Hills defeated Aliso Niguel 31-14 to sweep the Sea View League.
