Central Florida Monday night football recap
ORLANDO, FLORIDA – Hurricane Ian cancellations continued to provide us with make-up games on Monday night and last night produced some dramatic and, in some cases, shocking results.
The biggest shocker came with Evans upsetting Lake Brantley, 13-8, in a Class 4 Metro, District 2 game. The Trojans (2-5 overall, 1-1 in 4M-2) won their second consecutive game and snapped the Patriots’ four-game win streak.
Lake Brantley (4-2, 1-1) came into the game as a postseason contender but now faces an uphill battle in a district that includes state powers Sanford Seminole and Apopka.
Chris Peterson and Jermaine Hardy scored on touchdown runs and Evans’ defense held Lake Brantley to just 103 total yards.
Elsewhere, Edgewater remained unbeaten (7-0, 2-0) with a hard-fought, 14-6, Class 3M, District 3 victory against Wekiva (3-4, 0-1). But the win came at a price as star running back CJ Baxter, a Texas commit, and starting quarterback Chase Carter were hurt in the game.

Horizon (6-0) continued its Cinderella run with a 48-3 non-district victory against Lake Buena Vista (0-7). Trei Ginn ran for three TDs, Devon St. Clair scored twice, and Michael Dove and Kaio Oliviera each ran for a TD for the Hawks.
Independent school Central Florida Christian Academy (5-0) also remained unbeaten with a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback in a 25-21 win against New Smyrna Beach. The Barracudas led 21-10 entering the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold the advantage.
Marcus McCrimmon and AJ Stoneburg had TD runs, and Jacob Kania threw a TD pass to lead CFCA.
In a Class 4M, District 5 game, Lake Minneola (5-1, 1-0) continued its winning ways with a 49-7 blowout of Ocala West Port (4-3, 0-1).
Also winning big were the Lyman Greyhounds (5-2, 2-0), who raced past Winter Springs in a Class 3M, District 2 game. It is the first time that Lyman has won five games in a season since 2018.
“They came out laser-focused and they handled business in all phases of the game,” Lyman coach Jermel Jones said.
Bishop Moore, meanwhile, stunned previously unbeaten Tohopekaliga 31-2 in a non-district game.
Riley Willis threw for a TD and ran for another to lead the Hornets (4-3). Ladanian Sweeney scored on a TD run and Mark Nonsant had a pick-6 for Bishop Moore.
“Toho is a well-coached team that is building something special over there,” Bishop Moore assistant coach Billy Hubbard said. “Their offense is hard to prepare for, especially on just a couple of days of prep. Our kids responded with a good showing on both sides of the ball.
“Our defense led the way,” Hubbard said. “We ended with up three interceptions by Mark Nonsant, Luke Allender and Brendan McDonald.”
Jones, meanwhile, continued its comeback with an 18-7 victory against Kissimmee Osceola in a non-district contest. The Tigers (4-2) last season advanced to the Class 6A state semifinals.
Quarterback Maxson Jean-Denis passed for 2 TDs and Dylan Wade ran for a score to lead Jones.
Freedom (Orlando) also played well, beating Oak Ridge 21-6 in a Class 4M, District 4 game. The Patriots (3-3) remain in contention for a district championship, while Oak Ridge (1-5) has lost two straight.
“We’re always grateful for a win for sure,” said Freedom quarterback Khari Rennie. “I thought our defense played a heckuva game. Oak Ridge fought hard the whole game and didn’t give up.
“I don’t feel like we have played to our full potential yet this season,” Rennie said. “There are things we have to clean up and we’re working on.”
Timber Creek (3-4, 1-0) bounced back from a lopsided loss to Edgewater by blanking Colonial 44-0 in a Class 4M, District 3 game. The Grenadiers (0-6, 0-1) are still looking for their first win.
South Lake (0-6, 0-1) continues to look for its first win after falling to Ocala Forest 35-6 in a Class 3 Suburban, District 8 game. Vimel Poole tossed five TD passes to lead Forest (3-3, 1-0), with Tramar Cave, AJ Adams and Matt Hart on the receiving end.
In Class 2S, District 8 game, Port Orange Atlantic (2-5, 1-0) upended Lake Weir 26-8. The Sharks are tied for the district lead with Crescent City.
Also, Gateway defeated Liberty 27-0 in a battle of Kissimmee schools. The game was a Class 3S, District 8 contest.
In a non-district game, East Ridge edged Fivay 41-34.
