Southern California Top 25: Mater Dei on top, Mission Viejo moves up in Week 2 high school football rankings
Here are Scorebook Live's Top 25 Southern California high school football rankings for the week of Sept. 2. Our rankings encompass the Southern Section, LA City Section and San Diego Section.
1. Mater Dei - 2-0 - @ Centennial (Arizona) 7:00 PM Friday
Mater Dei cruised to a 63-7 win over Villa Park last week. Now they'll take on Arizona powerhouse Centennial. Through two games, Bryce Young has 487 passing yards and seven touchdowns on nearly 75-percent completion.
2. St. John Bosco- 2-0- neutral vs. Liberty 7:00 PM Friday
The Braves have manhandled elite out-of-state visitors in DeMatha and Don Bosco Prep. DJ Uiagalelei has thrown for 571 yards and seven touchdowns on zero interceptions through two games.
3. Corona Centennial- 1-1- @ Cathedral Catholic 7:00 PM Friday
After losing by 30 to Mater Dei to open the season, beating Orange Lutheran 56-14 last week must've felt great for Centennial. That just goes to show how much separation there is between the elite teams in the country and the next tier. This week the Huskies will be tested in San Diego against a very good Cathedral Catholic team.
4. JSerra - 1-1- home vs. Bishop Amat 7:00 PM Friday
JSerra only drops one spot after losing to St. Joseph Regional in a close game. They have a chance to bounce back in a big way against Bishop Amat. Cal-commit RB Chris Street is already at 309 total yards this season.
5. Mission Viejo- 2-0- @ La Habra 7:00 PM Friday
In the first half against Santa Margarita last week, Mission Viejo looked unstoppable. They came out flat in the second half, but still did enough to win and move up a spot with Narbonne dropping. If they win and JSerra loses, don't be surprised to see them at four next week.
6. Calabasas- 2-0- home vs. Serra (Gardena) 7:00 PM Friday
After a ho-hum victory over Bakersfield to start the season, the Coyotes took down Rancho Cucamonga 45-26 last week. But things get more difficult with Gardena Serra coming in on Friday.
7. Sierra Canyon- 2-0- @ Oaks Christian 7:00 PM Friday
With impressive victories over Westlake and Lawndale, the Trailblazers have to be feeling great. Junior JD Sumlin has already rushed for 224 yards. This week they'll likely face their best competition yet at Oaks Christian.
8. Grace Brethren- 2-0- @ Muir 7:00 PM Friday
Behind a dominant second half, Grace Brethren disheartened Oaks Christian 54-28 last week in a statement victory. They already have 600 combined rushing yards as a team, and QB Mikey Zele has 372 passing yards.
9. Corona del Mar- 2-0- @ Palos Verdes 3:00 PM Friday
Friday afternoon, the Sea Hawks will be hosting the Sea Kings. Ethan Garbers has an incredible 820 passing yards through two games to start the season. John Humphreys has 282 receiving yards.
10. St. Augustine- 2-0- neutral vs. Loyola 7:00 PM Friday
St. Augustine has been dominant through two games, beating Bonita Vista and Eastlake by a combined 84-7.
11. Servite- 1-0- @ Bishop Gorman 8:00 PM Saturday
It would not be unreasonable to guess that the entire Friars quad is very excited for this weekend's trip to Las Vegas to play Bishop Gorman. Their 48-7 win over JW North was promising, but beating Gorman will be a tall task.
12. Narbonne- 1-1- @ St. Paul 7:00 PM Friday
Narbonne dropped seven spots after an ugly loss to Lone Peak (Utah) on Saturday. A mixture of shock and anger hovered over the Gauchos as Lone Peak ran away with the 41-21 victory.
13. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks)- 1-0- @ Moorpark 7:00 PM Friday
Notre Dame kicker Anthony Prieto nailed a 33-yard field goal as time expired to lift Notre Dame over Desert Vista (Arizona), 37-35, in their season opener.
14. Cathedral Catholic- 2-0- home vs. Corona Centennial 7:00 PM Friday
The Dons started off the year with a nice 42-7 victory over La Costa Canyon. But after beating Saguaro last week, one of the best teams in Arizona, they're no longer under the radar. We'll see how good they really are this week when Corona Centennial comes knocking.
15. Norco- 1-0- home vs. Rancho Cucamonga 7:00 PM Friday
We'll know a lot more about Norco after their matchup with Rancho Cucamonga (Cougar vs. Cougar). They handled business in Arizona against Williams Field last week, but Rancho Cucamonga will torch them if they aren't ready for two steps up in competition.
16. Oaks Christian- 1-1- home vs. Sierra Canyon 7:00 PM Friday
The Lions are in a very dangerous part of their season. After a disappointing loss at home against Grace Brethren, there's a real chance that Sierra Canyon hands them another loss on their turf. And the following week they play at Alemany.
17. Serra (Gardena)- 1-0- home vs. Calabasas 7:00 PM Friday
The Cavaliers defeated Garfield last week, but they'll have their hands full with Calabasas on Friday. This should be a great ballgame.
18. La Habra- 2-0- home vs. Mission Viejo Friday 7:00 PM Friday
Speaking of great ballgames ... expect fireworks on Friday between two very good teams ready to bring their A-games.
19. Rancho Verde- 2-0- home vs. Upland 7:00 PM Friday
Rancho Verde won their first two games over Quartz Hill and Santiago by a combined 94-7. Superstar sophomore AJ Duffy has come out hot, throwing for 455 yards on 82-percent completion. But Upland will be their first real test.
20. Orange Lutheran- 1-1- neutral vs. Edison 7:00 PM Friday
After a lopsided loss to Corona Centennial, OLu can get back on track quickly. Edison can put up points in a hurry, so they'll have to shore up their defense.
21. San Clemente- 2-0- @ La Costa Canyon 7:00 PM Friday
The Tritons are off to a nice start after wins over Oceanside and Torrey Pines. They have more games on the way against teams they should beat but can't afford to sleep on in La Costa Canyon, Lincoln, and Edison. Then comes a real test against Corona del Mar before starting league off against Tesoro.
22. Upland- 1-1- @ Rancho Verde 7:00 PM Friday
Upland is back in the Top 25 after shutting out Crenshaw 48-0. Rancho Verde is a perfect opponent to prove themselves against. They really don't want to be 0-2 against upper division competition a week from now.
23. Rancho Cucamonga- 1-1- @ Norco 7:00 PM Friday
You have to credit Rancho Cucamonga for their ambition. Taking on two of the best public school teams in California in consecutive weeks with Calabasas and now Norco is no easy task. And while they aren't favored to win, they have enough offensive firepower to push Norco. Luckily their schedule calms down after this week.
24. Bishop Alemany- 2-0- @ Dorsey 7:00 PM Friday
The Warriors are coming off a bye-week after two strong offensive showings against Jordan (Utah) and Higley (Arizona). Another victory should be at hand against Dorsey before Alemany gets their biggest preseason test in Oaks Christian.
25. Lawndale- 0-1- home vs. Carlsbad 7:00 PM Friday
After a 37-12 loss to Sierra Canyon, the defending state champs will look to get it rolling this week against Carlsbad.
