Here are five teams that should be in the title mix in Class 2A/1A.

We’re taking a look at some of the state’s top returning wrestlers and top wrestling teams. Here are five teams that should be in the title mix in Class 2A/1A.

Central Linn

The Cobras returned to the podium at June’s OWA state championships in Sweet Home (third place) after a two-year absence. They bring back three wrestlers who medaled and nine qualifiers in all.

Coquille

The Red Devils had gone 15 years without a team trophy before placing fourth at June’s state meet. They return five qualifiers from that team, including two — sophomores Riley Jones and Tommy Vigue — who earned third-place medals.

Culver

The Bulldogs have been the gold standard of 2A/1A wrestling over the past two decades, adding a 13th state title in 15 seasons in June. They’ve finished first or second at all but one state tournament since 2002, and with five medalists and nine qualifiers back this winter, that streak should continue.

Lakeview

The Honkers haven’t taken home hardware from the state tournament since back-to-back second-place finishes in 2008-09, but with three medalists returning — including senior Morgan Ludwig, their first individual champion since 2013 — and four qualifiers, they could challenge for a podium finish in February.

Pine Eagle

The Spartans’ ended a 44-year trophy drought with their fourth-place finish at the 2020 state tournament, then finished a program-best second to Culver at June’s championships. With the Butner brothers back for one final season along with senior Will Seggerman, a qualifier at 138 pounds, and freshman 106-pounder Hunter Buck, they’ll be in the mix again this winter.
