It must be the theme as winter turns into spring that head coaches are stepping down from high school football programs in North Carolina.

According to a report by the HighSchoolOT’s Joel Bryant, Cory Johnson has stepped down as the head football coach at Clinton High School.

Johnson is coming off a season where he led the Dark Horses to the Class 2A state championship game, with Clinton falling to Reidsville 28-18. Per Bryant’s report, Johnson is being tied to a position in South Carolina.

It was quite the season for the Dark Horses in 2023, with the program going 15-1. Success was the norm at Clinton under Johnson’s watch as the team won five conference championships and clinched postseason berths in all six seasons.

Johnson finishes his time at Clinton with an overall record of 61-12.
