Matt Swarmer takes an unconventional path from Pennsylvania high school to Chicago Cubs
Governor Mifflin is playing in the District 3 6A semifinals today against Manheim Township, and a former Mustang had a Memorial Day to remember at Wrigley Field.
Matt Swarmer, who starred for Governor Mifflin and Division II Kutztown State before being drafted in the 19th round in 2016 by the Chicago Cubs, made his long-awaited MLB debut Monday.
The 28-year-old gave up one earned run and struck out six in six innings in a 7-6 loss to the Brewers, but it felt like a win for Swarmer.
"Man, I wanted this ever since I was 5 years old," Swarmer told mlb.com. "Coming from a guy that went to Division II, it's possible for anybody. You've just got to work hard, and good things will happen."
His high school alma mater, Governor Mifflin (20-2), hosts Manheim Township (20-4) at 4:30 p.m. today for a spot in the District 3 6A final.
