3 Washington high school football games you should not have missed from Week 5 (9/29/2023)
Scott Bond offered the simplest explanation on his Chiawana High School defense's greatness.
"When you meet the quarterback," Bond said, "bad things can happen for him."
Add two more defensive touchdowns on the Riverhawks' season-long tab (now seven) as eighth-ranked Chiawana (4A) stopped No. 4 Kennewick (3A), 19-9, on Friday night at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco.
Tayten Cissne's scoop-and-score touchdown broke a 9-9 tile in the third quarter, and Aaron Lowry's 34-yard field goal with 1:29 remaining sewed up a victory.
Brooks Zaro had a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the first half as Chiawana built a 9-2 lead. The Riverhawks forced five turnovers in the game.
The win also keeps the defending Mid-Columbia Conference champions in the hunt for another league title.
"Our motto this week is we are trying to get back our league title, or have the opportunity to do it," Bond said. "Our kids have some pride and made sure it didn’t get away,"
KING'S WINS IT ON FINAL PLAY OF REGULATION
It was all-or-nothing time for fourth-ranked King's on the game's final play.
And the Knights settled for "all."
Noah Clark connected with Colton Adams in the left flat, and the sophomore stretched his arms - and the football - over the goal-line for the game-winning 3-yard touchdown in King's 15-13 victory over No. 9 Cascade Christian in Shoreline.
The score capped the Knights' 60-yard drive over the final 2:36.
"It was an iso play, and Cole went one on one with the cornerback," King's coach Jim Shapiro said. "It was an amazing catch."
King's cut the Cascade Christian lead to 13-9 on a safety at the 2:40 mark.
The Knights won despite committing four turnovers.
BENJI PARK LEADS LATE GIG HARBOR VICTORY
With two minutes remaining, and Gig Harbor trailing Timberline in a key 3A SSC game, Benji Park had a few words for a defensive assistant coach before he and the offense took the field.
"I will see you in two minutes after we scored a touchdown," Park told the assistant.
Park is proving to be a teenager of his word.
Covering 70 yards, the Tides got the game-winning touchdown on Park's 15-yard strike to Matthew Ehler with 44 seconds to go in a 17-14 win at South Sound Stadium in Lacey.
"He is showing what kind of leader he is," Tides coach Darrin Reeves said. "And the kids believe in him."
Park was in contention for the starting quarterback job during training camp, but lost out to Tyler Stowers. So, Park moved to tight end.
But injuries forced Park into action, and he led the Tides to a come-from-behind win over Peninsula two weeks ago in the annual "Fish Bowl" - and another win over Capital last week.
Ramar Reid gave the Blazers a 14-10 lead with his 1-yard touchdown run at the 2:02 mark.
