AHL’s Bakersfield Condors release awesome orange third jersey

Once known as the most fun team in hockey, the Bakersfield Condors might now be battling for the title of the sharpest looking uniforms in the game.

The AHL’s relationship over the past several seasons has seen many of the league’s clubs go out of their way to match the jersey styles and looks of their NHL affiliates.

For instance, the Ontario Reign wear the Los Angeles Kings’ black, white and silver, the Rockford IceHogs’ jerseys are simply Chicago Blackhawks uniforms with a different logo and a team such as St. John’s switched from Winnipeg’s color scheme to Montreal’s bleu, blanc et rouge the season the Canadiens became the IceCaps’ parent club.

There’s good reason for that, like helping new fans immediately associate the AHL club with their NHL affiliate, but it can sometimes lead to some boring jerseys and the same old combinations. It’s why teams who use departures from their parent club, like the Milwaukee Admirals, Grand Rapids Griffins and Chicago Wolves, stand out.

However, every so often an AHL team makes borrowing the color scheme work, and sometimes they do it better than the big club. Case in point? The Bakersfield Condors’ new orange alternate jerseys.

The official unveiling of the jerseys came earlier this week, and they’re beautiful. While orange may not seem like the ideal color for a jersey, the Condors make it work, and they do so even better than the Oilers. Edmonton’s orange alternate is sharp, no doubt, but the way the oil drop logo fits in with the rest of the jersey makes the Bakersfield sweater great.

The oil drop logo isn’t making its debut on these spiffy new duds, though. The secondary mark was introduced when the team became part of the AHL’s Pacific Division ahead of the 2015-16 season, but this is the first time it will be used on the front of an alternate jersey.

The Condors have been known for their jerseys in the past — take the Seinfeld-themed Puffy Shirt jersey or the Lord of the Rings uniforms — but it’ll be nice to see them bring out this alternate for more than a single game this coming season.
