Fourth-seeded Atlant Mytishchi stunned top-seeded Lokomotiv 6-1 in the first game of their Kontinental Hockey League Gagarin Cup Western Conference final series in Yaroslavl. The five goal margin of defeat was the largest suffered by Lokomotiv in its three years of Gagarin Cup competition.
Atlant’s convincing victory was lead by Ivan Nepryayev (two goals, assist), Oleg Petrov (goal, assist) and Sergei Mozyakin (goal, assist). Atlant’s defensive corps and netminder Konstantin Barulin neutralized Lokomotiv’s attack, which had been highly potent in earlier rounds of the Gagarin Cup.
Josef Vasicek scored Lokomotiv’s lone goal in the 28th minute. Pavol Demitra was held without a point, ending his Russian playoff consecutive game scoring streak at 12 games, during which he scored 17 points (four goals, 13 assists).
The KHL Gagarin Cup playoffs continue with the Eastern Conference final starting Thursday with Salavat Yulaev Ufa hosting Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Game 2 of the Lokomotiv-Atlant series will be Friday in Yaroslavl.
