Hall of Fame blueliner Bobby Orr’s career as a Boston Bruin ended in a Nov. 26, 1975 contest in which Orr registered one goal and one assist on a bad left knee. Orr had surgery to repair the knee on Nov. 29, and would never again suit up for the Bruins. Following the 1975 season, his contract was up and Orr wound up signing with the Chicago Blackhawks in the off-season. But that final game in Boston was the real end of Orr’s career. Over the next two seasons, he would play just 26 games, scoring six goals and 27 points for the Blackhawks. All of Orr’s greatest games, save his play in the 1976 Canada Cup, came in Boston’s black and gold. Now, through an auction running until Friday evening, fans wanting to get their hands on the final Bruins jersey worn by Orr can do so if they can put together a serious amount of dough. The current bid on the jersey, which is being
auctioned off through Heritage Auctions, is $44,000. Those looking to outbid the current highest bidder for the game-worn threads are going to have to pony up $46,000 for a shot to own Orr’s jersey.
The auction is interesting, however, in that even though the jersey was Orr’s final game-worn Bruins sweater, it doesn’t mean he was the last to wear it.
From Heritage Auctions: “Like most jerseys of the era, the garment was repurposed for secondary use at the farm club level following Orr's ownership, when the Bicentennial patches were removed and the logo Bruins patches relocated — the stitching paths of all patches remain visible. Fight strap remains at lower rear tail.”
But while that might bring into question whether or not this was, in fact, Orr’s final Bruins jersey, Heritage Auctions states “the exact matching of idiosyncrasies in the crest and elbow stitching is unimpeachable evidence of authenticity,” adding that Orr is wearing this exact jersey in a photo used for the cover of the
July 1976 issue of The Hockey News. The estimated value of the jersey was $100,000, so maybe the current $46,000 price tag is a steal. So if you can round up 459 friends, Orr’s final Bruins game-worn jersey could be yours for the low, low price of $100 per person.
