PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Jeff Carter is having a career year.

The Philadelphia Flyers need him to stay hot, especially now

that Daniel Briere is hurting.

Carter looks to help the shorthanded Flyers to a ninth win in 12

games when they host the New Jersey Devils on Thursday.

The 11th overall pick of the 2003 draft, Carter had a pair of

goals in a 4-3 overtime win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The

23-year-old scored 29 goals last season, but already has 18 -

tying him for the league lead with Buffalo's Thomas Vanek.

The Flyers improved to 8-1-2 in their last 11 games, but were

dealt a tough blow when Briere left midway through after

aggravating a groin injury. Briere had missed nine straight and

14 of the last 16 games with the injury.

Briere, who had 31 goals and 41 assists last season, will miss

four to five weeks.

Philadelphia hopes Carter can lead it to a fourth straight win

over the Devils. His overtime goal helped the Flyers to a 3-2

win in the last meeting on October 25 at the Wachovia Center.

The Devils had their season-high, five-game winning streak

snapped with a 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday. New Jersey

was slowed by the Penguins after scoring 24 goals during its

winning streak.
