Center Vitale signs a two-year, US$1.1-million extension with Penguins

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Pittsburgh Penguins signed centre Joe Vitale to a two-year, US$1.1-million contract extension Friday.

Vitale has three goals and seven assists while dressing for 44 of Pittsburgh's 51 games. He plays on the club's third and fourth lines as well as the Penguins' fourth-ranked penalty-killing unit.

Vitale, who made his NHL debut for Pittsburgh last season, leads the team in faceoff percentage (55.9 per cent) and has 24 blocked shots. The five-foot-11, 205-pound American would have been a restricted free agent this off-season.
