ARLINGTON, Va. - Defenceman Karl Alzner is returning to the Washington Capitals, agreeing to a US$2.57-million, two-year contract Friday.
Alzner, 22, will make $1.3 million next season and $1.27 in 2012-13—salaries he figures are lower than perhaps he might have deserved.
"For me, personally, I think that there was a little left on the table," Alzner said during a conference call.
He played in all 82 games in 2010-11, his first full season in the NHL, with two goals, 10 assists and 24 penalty minutes.
"I knew there was probably a 98 per cent chance I'd be back," said Alzner, taken by Washington fifth overall in the 2007 NHL entry draft.
Still, he added, "It's a big relief. I'm happy that it's done."
Also on Friday, the Capitals re-signed right-winger Francois Bouchard to a one-year contract.
Bouchard had 12 goals and 12 assists in 74 games with the AHL's Hershey Bears last season. He was a second-round draft pick in 2006.
