The past week hasn’t been kind to New Jersey Devils winger Jordin Tootoo.

During Tuesday’s fracas with St. Louis, Tootoo suffered an injury when fighting with Blues tough guy Ryan Reaves that will keep him out of Thursday’s game. On top of the injury, though, Tootoo also learned Thursday that he’s been hit with a $2,000 fine for diving.

Tootoo’s second citation for diving came following a Jan. 4 game against the Detroit Red Wings. When skating into the Red Wings zone, Tootoo came into contact with Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall, who gave Tootoo a slight shove in the side. Tootoo went sprawling to the ice, but neither player was whistled on the play:

Coincidentally, Kronwall was also involved in a play that saw Winnipeg Jets rookie Nikolaj Ehlers fined for diving.

Like all players fined for embellishment, this is Tootoo’s second time being cited by the NHL. The first incident, however, does not carry a fine and the incident in question is not made public. The league does state which game the dive occurred in, though, and that was an Oct. 18 game between the Devils and New York Rangers.

Tootoo was not given a specific penalty for diving, but he did draw an interference penalty in the second period after taking a bump from Rangers winger Viktor Stalberg.

Tootoo’s fines for diving will increase by $1,000 for each subsequent citation, up to a maximum of $5,000. If Tootoo’s caught embellishing calls four times, Devils coach John Hynes will also receive a $2,000 fine that will increase by increments of $1,000 to a maximum of $5,000 for each subsequent diving fine for Tootoo.

Tootoo is the sixth player this season to be fined for diving and the second Devil in the past week. Bobby Farnham, who was suspended four games Wednesday for an unrelated incident, was fined $2,000 for diving Jan. 7.
