The Anaheim Ducks have been shutout in five of their first eight games, are in a tie for last place in the Pacific Division and have one of the league’s worst goal-differentials at minus-15. One would think the Ducks might be due for a break, but instead the bad news got worse.

Anaheim announced Tuesday evening that captain Ryan Getzlaf will need a non-emergency appendectomy and is set for surgery Wednesday. The Ducks said Getzlaf has been dealing with, “discomfort intermittently over the last six weeks,” and following surgery will be out of action approximately four to 12 days.

If Getzlaf is out for the entire 12 days, he could miss up to six games.

Because of the injury, Getzlaf will not be in the lineup for the Ducks Tuesday evening as they look to bust their current two-game losing streak. Anaheim heads into Dallas looking to score for the first time in two contests, as well.

Through eight games this season, Getzlaf has mustered just one point — an assist in Anaheim’s lone win over the Minnesota Wild. Getzlaf, 30, has averaged nearly 19:15 in ice time, but hasn’t skated more than 20 minutes since the Ducks’ fourth game of the season. In 2014-15, Getzlaf scored 25 goals and 70 points in 77 games and averaged more than 20 minutes per night.
