The Florida Panthers have dealt Roberts to the Penguins in exchange for defenceman Noah Welch. The 40-year-old Roberts, an unrestricted free agent July 1, had hoped to be dealt to Ottawa or Toronto but in the end accepted the move to join Sidney Crosby in Pittsburgh after deliberating all day Monday.

Roberts has 421 goals and 451 assists in 1,127 career games with Calgary, Carolina, Toronto and Florida. Roberts has played in 108 games since last season with 27 goals and 47 assists and is plus-9 during that span.

Roberts was the 12th overall pick in the 1984 draft, the same draft in which the Penguins selected Mario Lemieux first overall. He broke into the NHL in the 1986-87 season playing five games with the Flames, and became a full-time player the next season.

Welch, 24, has played in 22 games for the Penguins this year registering one goal and one assist with 22 penalty minutes.
