Goren's third-period goal earns Moose 1-0 playoff win over Griffins

Publish date:

Goren blasted a shot from the top of the slot over the glove of Grand Rapids' goaltender Jimmy Howard for the game's lone goal. Drew MacIntyre stopped 23 shots for the shutout. Howard was stellar, making 28 shots.

The Moose and Griffins played a cautious first period, with the home team outshooting Grand Rapids 10-6 despite not recording its first shot until the 11:14 mark.

The tempo quickened in the second as Manitoba exerted good offensive pressure but couldn't beat Howard in outshooting the Griffins 8-6.

The third was pretty much a carbon copy of the first two until Goren scored with just over nine minutes remaining. Jason Jaffray picked up an assist on the goal, extending his points streak versus Grand Rapids to eight games.

The second game in the series is scheduled for Saturday night at the MTS Centre.

Wilson's seven-game sentence for boarding is the fifth suspension of his career, but by not penalizing him for what it acknowledges to be a direct blow to the head, the NHL once again is sending the wrong message.
