HC MVD evens KHL Gagarin Cup final 2-2 with 2-1 win over Ak Bars

Publish date:

Following today’s 2-1 victory over Ak Bars in Kazan, HC MVD has bounced back from a two-game deficit to tie the best-of-seven Kontinental League Gagarin Cup final at 2-2, building the drama as the series shifts back to Balashikha for Game 5 Friday.

Prior to the loss today, Ak Bars suffered another blow when it was announced that their captain, Alexei Morozov, would be out for the rest of the series as a result of the shoulder injury he sustained midway through the third period of Game 3 Monday.

After a scoreless first period, which featured conservative play by both teams, Evgeny Fedorov put HC MVD on the board in the early in the second. Nine minutes later, Roman Kukumberg fired home the rebound of a shot by teammate Mikhail Yunkov to tie the score at 1-1. Great play by HC MVD netminder Michael Garnett kept the score tied into the second intermission.

In the third period, HC MVD’s Yury Dobryshkin slipped the defense six minutes in and converted on a power play opportunity for what would prove to be the game winner.
