The L.A. Kings added depth to their forward group acquiring Kris Versteeg from the Carolina Hurricanes, the team announced.

The Alberta native has appeared in 63 games with Carolina this season scoring 11 goals and 22 assists.

In exchange for Versteeg, the ‘Canes receive prospect Valentin Zykov and a conditional fifth-round pick at the 2016 NHL draft.

Zykov, the Kings’ 2013 second-round pick, is in his first professional season with the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League. The 20-year-old Russian has seven goals and seven assists in 43 games.

Versteeg is in the final year of his four-year, $17.6 million deal and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free-agent in July.

The 29-year-old won Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010 and 2015.

To make room for Versteeg on their active roster, the Kings placed Marian Gaborik on long-term injured reserve.

Originally a fifth-round pick of the Boston Bruins in 2004, Versteeg has appeared in 536 NHL games with the Blackhawks, Maple Leafs, Flyers, Panthers and Hurricanes.
