Hudler completed his hat trick with a breakaway goal to put the Red Wings ahead 3-0 with 14:37 left in the third period. Pavel Datsyuk assisted on all three goals by Hudler.

MacDonald stopped Vincent Lecavalier during a 2-on-1 break 3 minutes after Tampa Bay pulled within 3-1 on Tim Taylor's goal 6-minutes into the third.

Hudler put Detroit ahead 1-0 on a power-play goal at 11:57 of the second. He then made it 2-0 with 1:55 left in the period. Both goals came from the low right-circle.

Forty minutes after the game, the media was informed that an empty-net goal by Detroit's Daniel Cleary with a second left did indeed count. Originally, the public address announcer said the goal would not count because time had expired.

The list of Red Wings' not making the trip included goalies Dominik Hasek and Chris Osgood, defencemen Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Chelios and Mathieu Schneider, and forwards Robert Lang, Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom.

The Lightning got 25 saves from Marc Denis. Tampa Bay played without forwards Ruslan Fedotenko (hip) and Rob DiMaio (concussion).
