Hurricanes eye home-and-home sweep of Maple Leafs

Publish date:

Carolina (6-3-2) at Toronto (5-4-3) 7:30 pm EST

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Hurricanes look to complete a

home-and-home sweep of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

Carolina erupted for three goals in a span of less than four

minutes in the second period Sunday en route to a 6-4 victory in

the opener of this home-and-home series.

Tuomo Ruutu, Dwight Helminen, Ray Whitney and Eric Staal each

had a goal and an assist for Carolina, which converted 3-of-6

power play chances.

It was a breakout game for the Hurricanes, who had been just

2-for-37 with a man advantage in the last eight contests. The

goals should keep coming against the Maple Leafs, as Carolina

has scored 23 times in winning four of the last five meetings.

On the defensive side, the Hurricanes should have Cam Ward back

at goaltender. Ward was given the night off on Sunday, and

backup Michael Leighton stopped 29 shots.

Toronto is looking to bounce back from just its second loss in

the last six games. Vesa Toskala likely will be in net for the

Maple Leafs. Toskala is 1-3-2 with a 3.82 GAA in six career

games versus the Hurricanes.

The teams have split the last four meetings here.
