James van Riemsdyk scores OT winner as U.S. beats Czech Republic 3-2

Publish date:

OTTAWA - James van Riemsdyk scored the overtime winner as the United States beat the Czech Republic 3-2 in the fifth-place match at the world junior hockey championships Sunday.

The win completes a disappointing tournament for the Americans, who went 3-1 in the preliminary round but were knocked out of medal contention by underdog Slovakia 5-3 in the quarterfinals Friday.

American Eric Tangradi opened the scoring at 8:36 of the first period, a lead the U.S. held until the third period when Czech Zdenek Okal put the equalizer past goalie Josh Unice.

Ondrej Roman put the Czechs ahead 2-1, but three minutes later Cade Fairchild tied it up on a U.S. power play to send it to overtime.

The Czechs were lucky to keep it so close. Tomas Vosvrda stood on his head, making 45 saves for a Czech squad unable to stay out of the penalty box.

In other games, Finland topped Germany 3-1 and Latvia topped Kazakhstan 7-1

Juha Metsola made 25 saves as Finland knocked Germany out of relegation play into Division 1.

Roberts Jekimovs and Artjoms Ogorodnikovs both scored twice as Latvia rolled over Kazakhstan in relegation play. Kazakhstan will now move to Division 1.
