Leafs draft smart, but still falling

The hockey world must be in a state of shock. The Maple Leafs, led by Cliff "Draft Shmaft" Fletcher, actually traded up to ensure they could pick one of the stud defensemen available at the top of the draft board.

Perhaps this is a signal things are going in a different direction, or perhaps not.

The team will undoubtedly miss the playoffs for a fourth year in a row, their new coach doesn't seem to like people very much, they don't have a permanent GM in place and their captain, their heart and soul, as well as their leading scorer, will likely test the free agent market.

And who can blame him? The way the Leafs run, it's difficult to expect anyone would want to stay, especially after being jerked around by the front office.

I hope Sundin can go somewhere, push a contender over the edge and finally win his Cup.

As for the Leafs, I don't know what to think. They will always be my favorite team, but I'm beginning to wonder if, one day, I'm going to feel like a Chicago Cubs fan. They can tell me the future is bright and Luke Schenn is undoubtedly a stellar prospect, but the Leafs’ current roster has proven one star player, no matter how talented and hard working, cannot carry a team to victory by himself.
