Maxwell scores two goals, Nash has four points as Bulldogs hammer Whale 7-3

HARTFORD, Conn. - Ben Maxwell scored twice and Brendon Nash had a goal and three assists as the Hamilton Bulldogs routed the Connecticut Whale 7-3 in American Hockey League action Friday.

Hunter Bishop, Aaron Palushaj, J.T. Wyman and Dany Masse also scored for Hamilton (25-13-5), which scored seven goals for the second straight game.

Ryan Garlock, Evgeny Grachev and Jason Williams scored for the Whale (21-17-7), who came back from a three-goal defecit to tie the game 3-3, only to surrender four straight.

Curtis Sanford made 28 saves for the Bulldogs.

Connecticut starter Chad Johnson allowed three goals on six shots and was pulled just six minutes into the game. Pier-Olivier Pelletier stopped 18 of 22 shots in relief.

Bishop opened the scoring 1:50 into the game when his shot from the blue-line beat Johnson through traffic.

Palushaj put Hamilton up 2-0 with a power-play goal at 3:05 of the first period. Nash sent a pass to Palushaj, who skated down the right wing then cut in front of the net and slid a backhand past Johnson.

Nash added his third point of the period with a power-play goal at 6:02. Nash's snap shot bounced off Johnson's blocker and into the net.

Pelletier replaced Johnson after Nash's goal.

The Whale started their comeback at 6:51 of the first with a short-handed goal. Garlock received the puck from Michael Del Zotto before firing a backhand shot that deflected off Sanford's blocker and in the net.

Connecticut made the game 3-2 at 14:48 of the first with a power-play goal. Tim Kennedy fired a shot that was stopped by Sanford. The rebound bounced out and onto the stick of Grachev, who whacked the puck past the goaltender and in.

Connecticut tied the game 31 seconds into the second period with a power-play goal. Wade Redden fed, Williams who beat Sanford with a snap shot.

The Bulldogs regained the lead at 18:02 of the second. Alexander Avtsin fed the puck to Wyman, who rifled a shot past Pelletier and into the top of the net.

Masse increased Hamilton’s lead to 5-3 at 1:03 of the third period as Alex Henry's shot was redirected by Masse past Pelletier.

Maxwell scored a power-play goal at 5:20 then added his second goal of the game at 7:01, backhanding a Palushaj feed past Pelletier.
