More to 1972 than Summit Series

Publish date:

The year every NHL player should be thankful for is 1972.

Most Canadians would remember it for the eight-game Summit Series between Canada and Russia, but it was much more than that. It was the year the World Hockey Association started and it squashed the reserve clause, which bound a player to a team – even without a binding contract - for as long as the owner wanted him.

Players had no leverage back then, but when the WHA arrived the money became dramatically better.
