EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oilers traded goaltender Mathieu Garon to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday in exchange for netminder Dany Sabourin, forward Ryan Stone and a fourth-round pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft.

Garon, 31, has a 6-8-0 record this season along with a 3.17 goals-against average and .895 save percentage. He made 37 saves in the Oilers' 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night, his first start since Dec. 30.

Sabourin, 28, is 6-8-2 this season with a 2.85 GAA and .898 save percentage. Stone, 23, has 28 points (9-19) and 53 penalty minutes in 38 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League.

"Addressing our goaltending situation was a high priority for us," Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini said in a statement. "Moving forward, we believe we've accomplished that as well as acquiring some valuable assets for our organization."

Garon, a native of Chandler, Que., has played parts of eight seasons with Edmonton, the Montreal Canadiens and the Los Angeles Kings. In 199 career NHL appearances, he has a 91-82-13 record, .904 save percentage and 2.84 GAA.

Garon was Edmonton's starter in 2007-08 before losing his job to Dwayne Roloson. Last season, Garon was 26-18-1 with a 2.66 GAA.

Sabourin, a native of Val d'Or, Que., has played parts of four seasons with the Penguins, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. In 57 career NHL games, he has an 18-25-4 career record with a 2.88 GAA and .898 save percentage.

The Penguins, losers of eight of 10 before beating Anaheim 3-1 on Friday night, have been troubled by sub-par goaltending while going 10-16-1 since mid-November.

Starting goalie Marc-Andre Fleury is having a down season since helping lead the Penguins to the Stanley Cup final last spring, and the team hopes adding Garon will give him a boost. Fleury is 14-11-2 with a .905 save percentage and a 2.94 GAA, missing a month from mid-November until mid-December with a groin injury.

Stone, a Calgary native, has one assist and seven penalty minutes in eight career NHL games.
