Old-fashioned donnybrook breaks out in latest edition of Habs-Leafs rivalry

The faces might change, but the heated Montreal-Toronto rivalry always stays the same.

Fighting’s place in hockey seems to diminish with each passing season, but there was a scene Saturday night in Toronto that will have older fans reminiscing of the ‘good ol’ days’ of the ‘70s and ‘80s.

It's a story as old as time, or about 100 years or so: Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

With the Habs ahead 4-2 at the midway point of the contest, it all started when Leafs forward Matt Martin knocked over Montreal defenseman Jeff Petry with a hit. After Leafs defenseman Matt Hunwick’s point shot was deflected over the glass and the whistle was blown, Canadiens recent AHL call-up Bobby Farnham skated toward Martin before the Toronto enforcer dropped him to the ice.

Tilly time. Fisticuffs. Donnybrook!

As the video below shows, two fights break out at once, with Montreal forward Michael McCarron going after Martin, while Farnham finds a partner in Toronto rookie Frederik Gauthier. Defensemen Nathan Beaulieu and Roman Polak also got their mitts off, but just kind of stood and watched and weren’t assessed penalties. When it was all said and done, McCarron and Martin each got an extra two minutes for roughing, while Gauthier and Farnham were tossed from the game.

In other news, Toronto rookie Mitch Marner had primary assists on all three of his team’s goals (two of which were absolute beauties: here and here), Montreal rookie Nikita Scherbak scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game and McCarron notched the insurance goal from the goal line for his first of the season as the Habs went onto win 5-3. Montreal has now taken 13-straight games against Toronto.
