Penguins owner Mario Lemieux to meet with Kansas City officials

Kansas City has a brand new arena to offer. The US$276-million Sprint Center is scheduled to open in time for the start of the 2007-08 NHL season. Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle said in a statement they are meeting with Kansas City officials as part of their effort to explore all options for a new arena.

They will meet with government officials tomorrow but said they will continue to explore other options as well.

The team's future became unclear last month after its sale to Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie fell through and the state Gaming Control Board denied Isle of Capri Casino a slots licence.

The licence was critical to the team's survival in Pittsburgh as Isle of Capri had promised to spend US$290 million to build the team an arena.
