The Hockey News Player of the Week for the period of Feb. 4-10 is Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin.

Since Sidney Crosby went down with an injury in a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning Jan. 18, the 21-year-old Russian star has stepped up and led the Penguins to a 6-2-2 record.

Malkin had at least three points in each of the three games this week (3G, 7A), including a four-point effort against Philadelphia Sunday, Feb. 10.

His stellar play has launched him into a tie for second place in the scoring race, with a total of 73 points (31G, 42A), only three behind fellow countryman, Alex Ovechkin.

Malkin is on pace for more than 100 points this season and is only 13 away from topping his rookie total, with 26 games left to play.
