Predators sign D Shea Weber, G Dan Ellis to multi-year contracts

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Predators signed defenceman Shea Weber and goaltender Dan Ellis to multi-year deals on Monday.

Weber signed a US$13.5-million, three-year deal, while Ellis received a $3.5-million, two-year contract. Weber, 23, had 20 points (6-14) in 54 games last season.

"Shea has evolved into one of our core players," Predators president and GM David Poile said in a release. "He is both a player and a person that every team covets. He is big and strong, skates well, and possesses a booming shot."

The 6-3, 213-pound native of Sicamous, B.C., had his best season in 2006-07, when he posted 40 points (17-23).

In 161 career NHL games, he has amassed 70 points (25-45) and 161 penalty minutes.

Ellis, 28, posted a 23-10-3 record and a 2.34 goals-against average with six shutouts and an NHL-leading .924 save percentage last season.

"We have the utmost confidence that Dan Ellis is a No. 1 goaltender in the National Hockey League," Poile said. "When given the opportunity to display his skill and talent, he rose to the occasion, and was a crucial part of our team making the playoffs in 2008."
