Proteau's Blog: I left my heart in...

Publish date:

• News: Disheartened by a feeling he “wasn't making a difference”, Martin Brodeur has stepped down from the NHL's competition committee.

Views: Can you say, “11-inch goalie pads are on their way,” boys and girls?

• Does anybody else think the St. Louis Blues' re-acquisition of Keith Tkachuk doesn't exactly pass the smell test – and not just because Tkachuk is the most overrated player since Jiri “Best Player Outside The NHL” Dopita?

Rent-a-player deals certainly have been common for a long time now, but there's something a little fishy about the Blues giving up a draft pick for a player who (a) the Thrashers came out and said they weren't interested in re-signing anyway; and (b) has made his intent to return to St. Louis perfectly clear.

• Curious to see the Pittsburgh Penguins cut ties with Michel Ouellet Tuesday.

Apparently, Pens GM Ray Shero didn't want to take his chances with the 25-year-old winger in salary arbitration, so he allowed Ouellet to become an unrestricted free agent instead. But to me, allowing a player who has potted 35 goals in the last two seasons to walk away without getting anything in return seems to be a fair-sized gamble.

• I laughed, laughed and laughed some more after reading that the Toronto Maple Leafs will be forwarding the names of nine of their former players – including Felix Potvin, Sylvain Lefebvre, Todd Gill, Shayne Corson, Calle Johansson and Craig Berube – for consideration as this year's inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

All due respect to those guys, but why doesn't Leafs management have them fill out applications for the Nobel Peace Prize and Miss Teen America pageant while they're at it?

I think Marty is the one goalie who could care less about pad size. I think he might even recommend it to get a leg up on all the Allaire disciples. I think he's tired of having to make saves with Avery in his lap and Tucker hitting him over the head with his stick. Or losing an important playoff game because Fisher (accidentally) cut his legs out. That and the Brodeur trapezoid.
