Proteau's Blog: We've got a great big Conroy...

Publish date:

• Craig Conroy is a nice pickup for the Flames. Teams looking for a veteran two-way center will now turn to a player such as Chicago's Martin Lapointe, who, like Conroy, is signed through next season at roughly $2.4 million.

• The Bruins looked extra-dreadful in a 6-1 loss to the Rangers Monday and are now 3-6-0-1 in their last 10 games.

“I hope this was rock bottom,” Tim Thomas told the Boston Herald.

On a team that's suffered 10-2 and 8-3 drubbings this season, that's a fairly bold statement by the goalie. I'd expect at least one Beantown-related trade any second now.

• If L.A. Kings GM Dean Lombardi winds up receiving a first-round draft pick when he deals Sean Avery before the trade deadline, I promise to never mention the Dan Cloutier signing again.

• The American League All-Star Game went off Monday at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto with barely a hitch (the exception being the fan who loudly gave it to Leafs GM John Ferguson a couple times during the opening ceremonies). Kudos to all involved for an entertaining all-star weekend.

One of my favorite points of the game came when Chilly, the Houston Aeros mascot, strolled around the building with nothing covering his canine parts but a pair of white mens' briefs.

Inappropriate? That's debatable, but Chilly had many fans and even a few of us hardened cynics in the press box howling with laughter. That's more than I can say for most mascots these days.
