Put fans in net for breakaway challenge
Before the All-Star Game is all but forgotten I have one more suggestion on how to improve the breakaway competition for next year.
There is a lot of potential for this to be an exciting event, but I think what kept the first run from bringing people out of their seats was the fact it was too much like a regular shootout.
Part of the problem was the shooters, but most of the problem was asking top NHL goaltenders to take part. The league should set up a competition for amateur goalies from across the continent to compete for the opportunity to play in net for this event.
They would win a trip to the game and have the honor of being on the same ice as the all-stars, but would be relegated to stay in the blue paint and let the players work their magic.
This would not only be a thrill for the fans, but it would eliminate any possibility of a Nabokov pokecheck spoiling the show.
