Fans itching to get a look at what the Stadium Series jerseys might be when the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings face off in Denver this season got a preview from an unlikely source.
In a Reebok catalog promoting new merchandise for the upcoming season, the logos for both the Avalanche and Red Wings for the Stadium Series contest adorned two sweaters.
Graphic designer Conrad Burry first posted the image to Twitter, which has since been picked up by hockey design blogs such as SportsLogos.net and Icethetics.info.
What the actual jerseys will look like is yet to be determined, but it’s apparent the Avalanche jersey — or at least the logo — will be somewhat similar to the third jersey logo and new shoulder patch that Colorado will be using in 2015-16. The shoulder patch logo that was unveiled for the upcoming season is exactly what is shown in the Colorado Stadium Series sweater.
As for the Red Wings, the logo appears to be very similar to what was worn at the 2009 Winter Classic held at Chicago’s Wrigley Field. The ‘D,’ which is stylized to look old-fashioned, is an homage to the Detroit Cougars, which were Detroit’s NHL team until the 1930 season. The striping on the jerseys is the major difference between the 2009 Cougars throwback and the one which will apparently be used at the 2016 outdoor contest.
At the 2009 game, the Red Wings used a horizontal red stripe atop a white jersey, which was a fantastic look and one of the best uniforms worn at an outdoor game to date. It appears for the Stadium Series, Detroit will be ditching the horizontal stripe in favor of a diagonal one running from left to right.
One hint about the jerseys in the Reebok catalog is that the stripe behind the Cougars ‘D’ is white. There would be little point in adding the white stripe as a detail on the sweater shown in the catalog were the Red Wings wearing white uniforms. This could mean Detroit will, in fact, be wearing a red jersey for the road contest.
SportsLogos.net’s Chris Creamer reported in mid August that the Red Wings would wear red and the Avalanche would wear white.
