I see in the local paper today that John Ashley, a Hall of Fame referee for 13 years in the NHL, has passed away.
He and the others of his time were in an age when, yes, there was only one referee and two linesmen.
I fondly recall watching games at Chicago Stadium as a kid and loudly booing as the refs were announced prior to puck drop.
Years later I've come to understand how important the work of Mr. Ashley, and the other referees of his time, was.
