Sean Avery back in the New York Rangers lineup against Islanders

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Sean Avery needed only one day of practice with the New York Rangers to make his way into the lineup.

The agitating forward, claimed off waivers Tuesday after being banished by the Dallas Stars, got into his first NHL game since Nov. 30 on Thursday night when the Rangers took on the New York Islanders.

Avery received a six-game NHL suspension after making crude comments about players dating his former girlfriends. The Stars decided not to take him back after Avery sought counselling.

He played eight games with Hartford of the AHL and had two goals and an assist before being claimed by New York off re-entry waivers for his second stint with the team.

Avery took the ice for his first shift just over a minute into Thursday's game and heard derisive chants from the crowd. He skated into Islanders defenceman Bruno Gervais from behind and fell to the ice, drawing cheers.
