Senators captain Alfredsson injures leg in third period against Islanders

Publish date:

During a power play about four minutes into the frame, Alfredsson played the puck behind the New York net. He avoided hard-hitting Brendan Witt, but took a big check up high from Poti and appeared to bang his leg against the end boards.

"Poti hit me and I just kind of got turned in the wrong direction and I just tweaked the muscle a little bit," Alfredsson said after getting post-game treatment. "I felt it right away and I wasn't able to finish."

Alfredsson stayed down on his knees for several moments as play continued up ice. Alfredsson finally got to his skates and gingerly made his way to the bench, stopping several times to avoid players who were still in game action.

"It was a little bit sore right away. It was tough to skate," he said. "It feels better now and we'll see how it goes (Wednesday)."

Alfredsson, who assisted on Joe Corvo's second-period goal that gave the Senators a 3-1 lead, remained on the bench until the following whistle. He was then escorted to the dressing room.
