As first reported by AZ Coyotes Insider's Craig Morgan, the Arizona Coyotes have acquired defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and a second- and seventh-round pick in 2022 from the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers did not receive anything in return.
Gostisbehere, who has two years left at $4.5 million, hasn't lived up to the expectations in Arizona and was a healthy scratch on occasion. This moves allows Gostisbehere a chance to play in a new system with a different coach and attempt to revive his career to the point where he was once considered one of the better offensive defenders in the league.
Gostisbehere, who has been in the NHL for the past six seasons, had a career high 65 points in 78 games in 2017-18 but has recorded just 51 in the three seasons since. At 28, Gostisbehere is still young enough to provide value and with over $25-million in cap space and just three other defenders signed at this point, this has a chance to work out for both parties.
Arizona now holds four picks in the second round in 2022 as the team looks to rebuild a prospect base that took a big hit by losing the first-rounder this season.
For Philly, the team gets extra cap space in a market where cap space is king this summer. It'll be interesting to see how the teams takes it, especially with rumors of the club showing interest in Seth Jones, among other big names.
