Swift Current regains second place in the East with 4-1 victory over Brandon

The Swift Current Broncos regained second place in the East Division standings with a 4-1 win over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings.

Swift Current's 13th win of the season moved them a point past Brandon with the Broncos holding a game in hand over the Wheat Kings.

Swift Current import forward David Stieler and defenceman Eric Doyle scored goals 5:56 apart in the middle period to help the Broncos post a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Matt Tassone increased the Broncos lead to 3-1 with a goal 4:51 into the third, and Dale Weise added an empty net goal in the final seconds.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Ice 3 Oil Kings 1; Hitmen 6 Warriors 1; Tigers 5 Thunderbirds 1; Hurricanes 5 Blades 2; Americans 3 Cougars 2; Giants 2 Bruins 1 (OT); Silvertips 3 Rockets 2; Blazers 4 Winter Hawks 2; and Chiefs 4 Pats 2.

At Swift Current, Sask., Brandon import forward Daniel Bartek had the lone Wheat Kings goal.

Broncos netminder Travis Yonkman posted his tenth win of the season with a 27-save performance.

Wheat Kings goaltender Joe Caligiuri falls to 11-8 on the season after yielding three goals on 21 shots.

Swift Current improved their record to 13-6-0-4, while Brandon is a point back with a 14-9-0-1 mark.

At Edmonton, Steve DaSilva and the Kootenay Ice (12-10-2-0) continue to bully their way up the Central Division standings, recording their fifth straight win, 3-1 against the Edmonton Oil Kings (9-11-1-3).


Hitmen 6 Warriors 1

At Moose Jaw, Alta., four power-play goals by the Calgary Hitmen (15-8-0-1) burned the Warriors (9-8-3-1).


Tigers 5 Thunderbirds 1

At Medicine Hat, Alta., Tyler Ennis scored twice to lead the Medicine Hat Tigers (14-8-2-0) to a win over the Seattle Thunderbirds (8-8-3-1).


Hurricanes 5 Blades 2

At Saskatoon, Colton Sceviour scored a hat trick and added two assists to lead the Lethbridge Hurricanes (16-7-1-1) over the Sakatoon Blades (8-14-1-0).


Americans 3 Cougars 2

At Kennewick, Wash., Jarrett Toll's short-handed goal with 11 seconds remaining in the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Tri-City Americans (16-5-0-0) held off the Prince George Cougars (9-16-0-0).


Giants 2 Bruins 1 (OT)

At Vancouver, Jonathan Blum's fifth goal with 76 seconds to go in overtime gave the Giants (17-4-1-2) a win over the Chilliwack Bruins (13-7-3-0).


Silvertips 3 Rockets 2 (OT)

At Everett, Wash., Zack Dailey scored a short-handed goal 31 seconds into overtime, giving the Everett Silvertips (12-10-0-1) a victory over the Kelowna Rockets (11-7-2-2).


Blazers 4 Winter Hawks 2

At Portland, Ore., the Kamloops Blazers (10-10-1-1) scored two third-period goals to pull away from a second-period tie and defeat the Winter Hawks (3-18-0-0).


Chiefs 4 Pats 2

At Spokane, Wash., Drayson Bowman scored two goals to extend his scoring streak to eight games and the Chiefs (16-3-1-2) powered past the Regina Pats (16-9-0-0).
