Player News…

Simon Gagne, LW, Philadelphia Flyers

2008/12/06: Flyers winger Simon Gagne has told the Philadelphia Daily News that it was virus-related fatigue and dehydration that led to his leaving Thursday's 3-2 home loss to New Jersey in the second period, not any concussion-related problems. He said, "I don't see why I am not going to play" (Saturday at Carolina). Gagne missed 58 game last season (and the entire playoffs) due to concussion symtoms, but has bounced back superbly this season with 31 points and a plus-15 rating over his first 24 contests.

Rob Schremp, W/C, Edmonton Oilers

2008/12/06: Playing in his second game this season, Edmonton forward Rob Schremp posted two assists in the Oilers' 5-4 shootout win at Los Angeles Friday night. Schremp has three assists over the two games. He saw just 13:51 of total ice-time, but Schremp, 22, did get 3:31 on the power play and is making the most of his call-up. He has star-level skills but has yet to stick at the NHL level.

Tomas Holmstrom, RW/LW, Detroit Red Wings

2008/12/06: The Red Wings are expecting winger Tomas Holmstrom to be in the lineup for Saturday's home game against Chicago, according to the Detroit Free Press. He has missed eight straight games with a sore back. Holmstrom, 35, had a solid 13 points over 17 games before being sidelined.

Marty Turco, G, Dallas Stars

2008/12/06: Stars goalie Marty Turco came 56 seconds from a shutout Friday, but held on in overtime and the shootout for a 2-1 home win over Colorado. He made 26 saves in the game. It was the second game in the past three that Turco has allowed just one goal, so perhaps he's breaking out of his awful start to the season. Even after the win, his .876 save percentage is tied for worst in the NHL among goalies with nine or more appearances.

Sam Gagner, C/W, Edmonton Oilers

2008/12/06: Young Oilers forward Sam Gagner did not play in Friday's 5-4 shootout win at Los Angeles due to concussion-like symptoms. The injury was suffered during Wednesday's home win against Dallas. He is day-to-day. The Oil have called up talented prospect forward Gilbert Brule from AHL Springfield to help fill the void. Brule had 12 points (eight goals and four assists) over 15 games for Springfield.

Peter Budaj, G, Colorado Avalanche

2008/12/06: Avalanche goaltender Peter Budaj busted out of a mini-slump with a strong performance in Friday's 2-1 shootout loss in Dallas. He allowed just one regulation goal on 24 shots before allowing two in the shootout. Budaj had allowed eight goals over his past two appearances. He has 9-12-1 record to go with a 2.71 GAA and .902 save percentage on the season.

Injury News…

Matt Carle, D, Philadelphia Flyers

2008/12/06: Flyers defenseman Matt Carle will miss Saturday's game at Carolina due to back spasms, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Carle has missed the past two games to the problem. He is considered day-to-day.

Owen Nolan, RW, Minnesota Wild

2008/12/05: Veteran sniper Owen Nolan left the Wild's game on Friday with the Canucks in the first period due to a lower body injury and is not expected to return. He's been red-hot lately, with a goal in four of his last five games before Friday.

Robert Nilsson, RW/LW, Edmonton Oilers

2008/12/05: After missing Wednesday's game with an upper body injury, Oilers winger Robert Nilsson was placed on injured reserve Friday. To take his roster spot, they called up young forward Gilbert Brule, who has spent all season with Springfield of the AHL, accumulating 12 points in 15 games.

Tyler Kennedy, RW/C, Pittsburgh Penguins

2008/12/05: The Penguins will be without young forward Tyler Kennedy four-to-six weeks after it was revealed Friday that his "undisclosed" injury is in fact a sprained knee. The sophomore had 15 points in 24 games before the injury struck.

Raffi Torres, LW/RW, Columbus Blue Jackets

2008/12/05: Having injured his right knee earlier in the week, Columbus winger Raffi Torres underwent surgery on Friday that will keep him on the shelf two-to-four weeks. He has just four points in 14 games for the Blue Jackets this season.
